Green farming gets $8 billion boost at UN climate summit / Bloomberg
One of many new commitments at this year’s COP27 UN climate meeting is related to farming and its impact on the planet.
In short: agriculture is a major greenhouse gas-emitter, primarily but not exclusively because cattle produce methane and excessive fertilizer- and pesticide-use messes with local (and downstream) ecosystems.
A new tranche of resources—adding up to about $8 billion—has been committed by around 275 governments, businesses, academic institutions, and organizations to help support projects (many of them R&D-related) aimed at reducing these impacts.
Among these projects are those meant to help expand rain-fed agriculture, monitor methane emissions in rice paddies, amplify vertical farming efforts, and provide technical assistance to farmers in arid regions.
