WHO Raises Alarm on Disease in Flood-Hit Areas of Pakistan / The Associated Press
A primary theme of this newsletter is that climate change-related issues aren’t independent of each other—they interconnect with pretty much everything else happening in the world.
Case in point: a recent torrent of floods that covered about a third of Pakistan’s total area, killed more than 1,500 people, and forced about 33 million people to flee their homes may also spark a wave of disease throughout the region as locals drink unsafe water, healthcare facilities remain shut down, and dengue- and malaria-carrying mosquitos thrive in the pools of water left behind as the flood waters subside.
The World Health Organization has said they foresee a “second disaster” stemming from these floods as outbreaks of waterborne and pest-carried diseases proliferate.
